One month ago today (13th) Benjamin made his appearance. Since then he has braved twos surgeries, pneumonia, gained a full pound and over 2" in length. He now weighs 2lbs 9oz and is about 14 3/4" long. It has been a bumpy road, but it has smoothed out for the time being, which is so wonderful.
He had a great day today. They made some adjustments to the depth of his ventilator tube and it made a big difference in his comfort and stats. I held him for two hours this afternoon and we both enjoyed a good nap together. They are very slowly weaning him from the ventilator, but we learned tonight that he will also need to have the secretions in his lungs clear some or have the ability to clear them himself in order to be successful in transitioning to CPAP (no tube down his lungs, just some light pressure and oxygen, but he would do the breathing on his own).
Last weekend they took him off milk and put him on a special formula that has the proteins more broken down in hopes that he will absorb the nutrients a little better, since it doesn't go through all of his intestines. They expect to transition him back to milk after his surgery to put his intestine back in. That surgery probably won't be for a couple months at least. The only "medication" he is receiving right now is sodium, since he has been a little low. His nurse today commented how good and rare that is that he is not on anything else after being through so much.
It is so fun to see him grow. Even though he is still so very small, he is bigger than he used to be and in much better shape. We praise God for this and thank you all so very much for continuing to stand with us in prayer for Benjamin.
